Hi Nancy, Good to hear from you. I'm not sure that I'm replying in the correct place! Speriamo bene!I never would have thought of making a video if I hadn't been asked but I think the openness and naturalism with which the kids express why they love to use their mother tongue should carry the message and provoke discussion better than all the writing we do in books. I'm amazed that MM allowed me to produce this; in the past it simply wouldn't have been allowed. We have a new management team at the moment who are somewhat more supportive of me and my ideas (as if they are MY ideas ;all grounded in research done by people like Jim, Tove and so on. However, when we had our Language Celebration Day at my school the children shared poetry they had written in their L1 and gave a brief explanation of it in English and then we showed the video.( the new elem.principal's idea!) My like- minded colleagues loved it but there were teachers who complained to the principal and head of school that “this is not the message we should be giving to our children”. It is hard for me to understand why people like this think the way they do.
I can only suppose that it is the result of the conditioning and damage that has gone on for years unchallenged in our educational systems . Anyhow I sent the link to Tove & Jimwho have sent it all over the world and I have received many wonderful emails from people who understand ;including a beautiful one from Alma Flor Ada which nearly moved me to tears.
We just have to keep putting the right message out there. X Eithne
